Crime Stoppers has partnered with the Cuyahoga County Environmental Crimes Task Force to help catch and prosecute illegal dumpers. The Cuyahoga County Environmental Crimes Task Force is a coalition of public agencies who are committed to enforcing Ohio’s environmental laws and prosecuting those who violate them.  

WHAT IS OPEN DUMPING?

Open dumping (illegal dumping) is the depositing of any solid wastes or scrap tires into a body of water or onto the ground at any site that is not a state licensed landfill or transfer station. Open dumping can be found along roadways and railroad tracks; in vacant lots and wooded areas; and near construction sites.  It also occurs on private property where the property owner must pay for the clean-up.

WHY REPORT OPEN DUMPING?

Open dumping is a crime that can

·         lower property values;

·         cost taxpayers money;

·         breed disease carrying rats, ticks and mosquitoes;

·         cause physical injury resulting from contact with broken glass, sharp metal, and hazardous waste;

·         pollute waterways;

·         cause air pollution from waste catching fire;

·         contribute to neighborhood blight and higher crime rates.

HOW DO I SUBMIT A TIP?

Submit a tip through the Crime Stoppers Tip Line 216-252-7463 or on-line www.25crime.com.

If you see someone dumping, try to get a description of the person and a license plate and vehicle description.  Report the date location and time. If you come across dumping after it has occurred, report the location, and the type of waste dumped. Submit photos if you can. Your tip will be forwarded to local law enforcement for investigation.

ORC 3734.03 “No person shall dispose of solid wastes by open burning or open dumping …. Whoever recklessly violates section 3734.03 of the Revised is guilty of a felony and shall be fined at least ten thousand dollars, but not more than twenty-five thousand dollars, or imprisoned for at least two years, but not more than four years, or both.
